Dimensions
When it comes to smaller crossover utility vehicles like the Terrain and CX-5, space is incredibly important. It’s a key spec in any SUV, but especially in smaller ones like these, as space is more limited the smaller the vehicle is as a whole. The GMC Terrain offers 29.6 cubic feet of space behind its rear seating, or up to 63.3 cu. ft. with the seats folded flat. The Mazda CX-5, on the other hand, only offers 29.1 to 59.3 cu. ft. of space.
Powertrain
When it comes to powertrains, the GMC Terrain offers just one option, a 1.5L four-cylinder gas-powered engine capable of generating up to 175 horsepower. The Mazda CX-5 offers two different 2.5L four-cylinder engine options, one offering 187 hp and the other up to 227 hp. The Terrain manages to achieve 24 mpg through the city and 29 mpg on the highway, while the CX-5 nearly matches that at 23/29 mpg.
Content
Both vehicles have a lot to offer in terms of features and content, but one area in which we believe the GMC Terrain gets a leg up is in terms of its AT4 and Denali trim levels. The Mazda brand doesn’t offer a luxury or off-road trim level on its utility vehicles, while GMC certainly does. So, if you’re looking for a luxury option in the segment, or one capable of tackling off-road adventures, the GMC Terrain is the obvious choice.
